The American jazz composer, pianist, organist and bandleader Carla Bley and her partner, jazz bassist and composer Steve Swallow talk with Torsten Maaß about avant-garde in music.
They talk about the beginning of their career. What brought them to Hamburg, which trends are current in music distribution, how youtube, mp3 and streaming affects the quality of music today. They share their inspirations with the audience and answer some questions.

Career Advice What advice do Steve Swallow and Carla Bley have for young musicians? The funny answer: move to china. It is a really blooming audience there. The more serious and a bit grim answer is that you should really think about doing something else. 'If you are okay with selling cars, you probably should sell cars', says Swallow. Get a musical career requiers an absolute commitment, because it is very difficult to survive and 'it is difficult not to eat'.
