Am 11. Mai 1936 wurde Carla Bley als Carla Borg in Oakland, Kalifornien geboren. In ihrem Job als Jazz-Musikerin ist sie sowohl Komponistin, als auch Bandleaderin, Arrangeurin, Pianistin und Organistin.

Leben
Der Hang zur Musik liegt Carla direkt im Blut. Ihre Eltern waren beide Musiker. Bereits im Alter von gerade mal vier Jahren begann quasi ihre Karriere. Zunächst sang sie in der Kirche und spielte dort Klavier und Orgel.

Im Jahre 1957 lernte Carla den Jazzpianisten Paul Bley kennen. Er ermutigte sie dazu, zu komponieren. Ziemlich bald spielte sie in New York mit Größen wie Charles Moffet sr. und Pharaoh Sanders. Zudem übernahm sie ab 1964 die Leitung des Jazz Composer's Orchestra - zusammen mit Michael Mantler. Im Jahr darauf gründete sie mit Mantler und Steve Lacy ein Jazzquintett. Eine Tournee stand nach einem weiteren Jahr an.

Sie leitete ab 1976 hauptsächlich eigene Bands, nachdem sie sich in der Zeit von 1967 bis 1971 mit dem Projekt "Escalator over the Hill" befasst und ab 1969 im Liberation Music Orchestra gearbeitet hatte.

2012 wurde ihr die Ehrendoctorwürde der Université de Toulouse II-Le Mirail verliehen.

Privates
Das Bandmitglied Michael Mantler wurde 1967 zu ihrem Ehemann. Beide haben eine Tochter, Karen Mantler. Sie ist Jazz Organistin.

Werk
Sie schrieb zunächst Stücke für Paul Bleys Trio, George Russel, Jimmy Giuffre und Art Farmer.
1964 gründete sie das Jazz Composer's Orchestra, kurz JCO.
Für Gary Burton komponierte sie im Jahre 1967 "A Genuine Tong Funeral", welches viel beachtet wurde.
1969 wirkte sie als Arrangeurin an "Charlie Hadens Liberation Music Orchestra" mit, welches 2005 ein Album namens "Not in Our Name" veröffentlichtem welches als Protest gegen die damalige amerikanische Politik gedacht war.
Mit "Escalator over the Hill" schuf sie eine Jazz-Oper. Die Aufnahmearbeiten dafür dauerten knapp drei Jahre. Das Projekt wurde 1973 mit dem französischen Grand Prix du Disque ausgezeichnet.
In den 70er und 80er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts war sie vor allem mit ihrer Gruppe "Carka Bley Band" aktiv und veröffentlichte etliche Jazz-Alben - alle im Stile des Big Band Jazz.

Life
Her love for music has always been in Carla's blood. Her parents were both musicians. She began her career at the age of just four years. At first she sang in church and played piano and organ there.
 
In 1957, Carla met the jazz pianist Paul Bley. He encouraged her to compose. Pretty soon she played in New York with musicians like Charles Moffet sr. and Pharaoh Sanders. In addition, she took over the management of the Jazz Composer's Orchestra - along with Michael Mantler. The following year she founded a jazz quintet together with Mantler and Steve Lacy. For another year there was a tour going.

She lead mainly own bands in the 1967 and in the period from 1967 to 1971 she worked on the project "Escalator over the Hill". Since 1969 she also worked in the Liberation Music Orchestra.

2012 she was awarded an honorary Doctor the Université de Toulouse II-Le Mirail.

Private
The band member Michael Mantler was her husband in 1967. They both have a daughter, Karen Mantler, which is jazz organist.

Work life
First, she wrote pieces for Paul Bley Trio, George Russell, Jimmy Giuffre and Art Farmer.

In 1969 she worked as an arranger with on "Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra", which released an album called "Not in Our Name". The album was intended as a protest against the American Politik of 2005.
With "Escalator over the Hill" she created a jazz opera. The recording sessions for it lasted almost three years. The project was awarded in 1973 with the French Grand Prix du Disque.
In the 70s and 80s of the last century she was working mainly with her group "Carka Bley Band" and published several jazz albums - all in the style of Big Band Jazz.
